My alma mater

I often rail against the University of Texas sports to my family, who in part live in Texas and are fans. Mostly, I’m not a fan of the money that gets poured into the University’s football program. I realize that a lot of that money generates more money, which enables so many other sports to thrive. But I think a college education should be about education, not about winning football games. I’m in the minority in this, though.

But I got a smile when I read this story about UT trying to convince the ICANN domain-name dispute-resolution board to allow it to control the term Texas Sports. From their ruling:

“Texas sports” is geographically descriptive and not protected by trademark. The University does not have the exclusive rights to “Texas” and “Sports.” The University does not have a registered trademark for “Texas Sports.” There is no likelihood of consumer confusion.

To add my own little bit here, I can point out that the ridiculous URL mackbrown-texasfootball.com (what happens after Mack Brown?) points out that UT has won the National Championship only 4 times. I wouldn’t consider that a great track record, but that’s my bias talking. I’m sure I’ll have some disagreement.
