Day 2: Cave Temples at Elephanta Island

First there was the deluxe ferry boat ride to the island, 9km away.  The trip took more than an hour.  I could have run there faster.
  • Those are the 'deluxe' ferry boats.
  • Naval station in the bay
      • Check out that black smoke. That's why the sky is so gray.
      • She wanted to charge me for taking her picture, so I snuck a shot while we were walking away. Love the digital.
        • A view of the dock.
              • M's afraid of the bats
              • Bat!
The monkeys are quite a problem at the caves.

                  • That monkey warning is true
                  • The monkeys attacked a family to get the bag of food they were carrying.
                  • Dr. J got a better shot of the monkey, but I got a better shot of the turbaned man watching him.
                    • Who's afraid of monkeys?
The caves and temples themselves were spectacular.  Similar to some that we saw in Sri Lanka, these caves were cut out of the mountain itself, sometime in the 6th century AD.

                        • Shiva lingam
                                    • The three heads of Shiva
                                      • Meditating Shiva
                                      • Shiva slaying the demon
                                      • The marriage of Shiva and Parvati
Alas, all great trips must come to an end.  So, too, Mumbai.  The journey home is never too long.

                                            • Sunset on the Arabian Sea
                                              • Enough with the pictures
